Japanese Classical Dance Concert
Create a full length concert program for your community

 Japanese classical dance has distinguished forms and styles using unique props and stage costume with elegant colors and textiles.  The dances tell an legendary story or romance between man and woman involving favorite Japanese characters such as samurai, geisha, animals in transformation, a street acrobat and so on.  The performance would be enjoyable even for people with less knowledge about Japan or have never seen traditional Japanese performing arts.
  • 60 to 90 minutes full length concert in theatre.
  • Either indoor theatre stage or outdoor stage.
  • Up to 10 performers in full costume or formal kimono in suodori style.
  • Commentary for each dance will be provided in spoken or written format.


Banquet Performance
Japanese classical dance for your special event

Either for formal ceremony, casual luncheon party or gallery opening reception, Japanese classical dance will make your event more special and lively.  The performance is arranged to suit your theme and type of the event.
  • Arrange program with a few dance pieces in 20 to 30 minutes.
  • Dancers may wear full costume or formal kimono in Suodori style.
  • Program may include a short lecture about Japanese classical dance or guest may perticipate in a dance workshop.  
  • Arrange time to interact with guests for Q & A.


Dance Workshop
Let's wear kimono and try Japanese classical dance!

You may have seen Japanese classical dance but never thought about trying it.  Workshop is a very rare opportunity that you can actually wear kimono and try the dance in your class room, studio, community center, or a library space.  Program is customized to suit group's particular need and it is accessible to all generations from 6 years old children to seniors.
  • 1.5 to 2 hours workshop consisting of a short lecture, demonstrations, how to wear and fold kimono, how to use osensu (dance fan), walking and dance practices.
  • Kimono set and a dance fan will be provided (max 20 people per session).
  • Workshop is designed for complete beginners and beginners with other dance background.
  • Any ages and groups --elementary school to college students, teachers, seniors, men and women as well as group of mixed ages.
  • Led by licensed instructors (shihan-natori) who teach in English and Japanese.


Lecture Demonstrations
400 years history of Kabuki theatre and Japanese classical dance

Kabuki dance started as women's performance on the street, and then became adult men's Kabuki theatre which started to develope the current performing styles and theatrical conventions.  The dance forms, styles, and visual elements are examined wihin the history of Kabuki while actual dance pieces are presented in front of the students. Lecture may be focused on the topics which your students study in the course and it may be related to the following study programs:

Japanese Theatre, Asian Theatre, Visual Elements, Japanese Study, Traditional Performances, Stylized Acting, Movement Analysis, International Study, Cultural Exchange Programs, and Other Performing Arts Programs.


Makeup Workshop
Experience Kabuki's white makeup

2 hours workshop to learn basic techniques for applying white theatrical makeup used by Kabuki actors, geisha and other theatrical professionals.
  • Participants will receive hands on practice by actually pitting makeup on their face.
  • Basic male or female makeup can be chosen.
  • Provides makeup materials brought from Japan.


Japanese Classical Dance Booth/ Kimono Fashion Show

Introducing Japanese classical dance and Kabuki Theatre by displaying costumes, props, dance fans and other authentic materials. 
Kimono fashion show is another idea to display the costumes actually worn by the models picked from the audience.  Kitsuke (or how to wear kimono and obi sash) demonstration introduces different ways of tying obi.  Audiences may also bring their own kimono to wear by getting instructions. 
 
Note: Costmes and props owned by IchiFuji-kai Dance Association may be rented under the contract with the company.
