KAORI IBUKI
Japanese Classical Dancer
Kaori was born and raised in the suburban areas of Tokyo, Japan. She liked drawing manga and spent time making monthly manga magazines with her friends as a child. She started acting in the middle school and joined theatre club (gekiken) in the university. She started a theatre company with the colleagues of the club and produced play productions in the shogekijo theatres in Tokyo.
She moved to New York City for study in 2003 and she started Japanese classical dance (nihon-buyo) with Soke Fujima-ryu's IchiFuji-kai Dance Association. She learned the dance from Fujima Nishiki, Fujima Kanjuro VII, Fujima Kanjuro VIII, Fujima Hiromu, Fujima Kanna, and five shihan-natori teachers in the school. During her college years, she worked as a treasurer of Graduate Student Association and a president of Graduate Theatre Club. She also organized Japanese classical dance events and theatrical productions for the college community. She obtained M.A. in Theatre degree from Hunter College CUNY in 2009.
Currently she is performing in festivals and educational programs in greater NY areas. She is singing with a Japanese chindon-ya style band, happyfunsmile and an Okinawan music unit, Miyarabi in a non-traditional Kabuki-mono cosplayer.
